What to wear for family photos

Simple, relaxed outfit ideas for natural family photography

One of the most common questions I get is what to wear for your family photos—and the good news is, it doesn’t need to be complicated.
The most important thing is that you feel comfortable, like yourselves, and able to relax into the session.

Start with simple, neutral tones

Soft, neutral colours photograph beautifully and help keep the focus on your connection as a family.
Think:
  • Creams, whites and soft greys
  • Warm beige and tan tones
  • Muted greens, soft blues or dusty pinks
These tones work especially well both at home and outdoors, and they create a calm, timeless feel in your photos.

Choose colours that complement, not match

You don’t need everyone in the same outfit or colour.
Instead, aim for colours that sit nicely together.
For example:
  • Creams and soft blues
  • Neutrals with a hint of green
  • Warm tones like beige, rust and soft browns
This creates a more natural, relaxed look than everyone wearing identical outfits.

Keep it comfortable (especially for little ones)

If something feels uncomfortable, it will show.
Choose clothes that:
  • You can move in easily
  • Feel like your everyday style
  • Your children are happy to wear
For babies and younger children, soft fabrics and simple outfits work best.

Avoid anything too distracting

Large logos, bold graphics, or very bright colours can draw attention away from the moments we’re capturing.
Simple is always best.
That doesn’t mean everything has to be plain—but keeping things soft and understated helps your photos feel more timeless.

Think about texture and layers

Texture can add so much warmth and depth to your photos.
Things like:
  • Cosy knits
  • Flowy dresses
  • Linen or soft cotton fabrics
Layers (like cardigans or overshirts) can also add variety without needing a full outfit change.

At home vs outdoor sessions

For at-home sessions, soft, cosy outfits work beautifully and help create that relaxed, everyday feel.
For outdoor sessions, think about the season:
  • Light, airy fabrics in warmer months
  • Cosy layers and knits when it’s cooler
The aim is always the same—clothing that feels natural in the setting.

For mums—keep it simple and flattering

You don’t need to buy anything new (unless you want to).
Flowy dresses, soft knits, or anything you feel comfortable and confident in works beautifully.
And most importantly—choose something you can move and relax in, especially if you’ll be holding your baby or sitting with your children.

Still unsure? I’m here to help

If you’re not quite sure what will work, you’re very welcome to send me a few options before your session.
Sometimes a quick message can take away all the stress and make the whole thing feel much easier.

The most important thing

Your photos aren’t about perfect outfits.
They’re about your connection, your family, and this stage of life.
What you wear should support that—not take centre stage.
